A Question of Medical Malpractiee

November 27, 2012

Fred Reed
By Fred Reed

This column may bore most readers. Bear with me. I offer it as a warning to the public.

On April 26, 2010, I went to see Dr. Philip Stanley, an eye surgeon at the Eye Clinic of Bethesda Naval Hospital of Bethesda, Maryland, for what he described as a routine removal of sutures following a corneal transplant at Johns Hopkins. In less than a half hour he ripped my eye wide open, inducing a massive choroidal hemorrhage and total detachment of the retina, leaving the eye blind. My attorney filed a malpractice suit under the Federal Tort Claims Act to Robert Thomas, of the Office of the Judge Advocate General in Norfolk, Va. The following are documents submitted under the FTCA. Stanley has since been at the Wilmer Eye Clinic of Johns Hopkins, which is aware of the malpractice suit. This sugests that despite good reputation–both Johns Hopkins and Bethesda Naval are thought to be of high quality–it is wise to research very, very carefully the physician who will attned you.

Robert Thomas of the Office of the Judge Advocate General’s office simply didn’t respond to the suit despite repeated requests.

What Happened: Statement of Fred Reed

Dr. Stanley told me that the remaining visual problems in the eye were caused by astigmatism due to wrinkles in the cornea which were caused by the sutures that were used in the transplant. He suggested to me in an email on January 20, 2010 that I come in and see him between 29 March and 1 April “to take out sutures.”  At that point I understood that only a few sutures would be removed.  I made an appointment to see Dr. Stanley at April 26, 2010.

At around 9:00 AM I arrived at Dr. Stanley’s office at Bethesda Naval Hospital.  Dr. Stanley briefly examined me before a slit lamp and stated, “It’s been more than a year and the cornea is transparent and healthy, so we might as well take them all out.” He then said that “I want to make sure that removing the sutures will resolve the problem, since if it won’t help the vision there was no reason to do it.”  To this end he had a corpsman take me to another room, fit me with a hard contact lens, have me read an eye chart to check my vision.  It was explained that the lens covers the wrinkles in the cornea which fill with tears negating the astigmatism.  This was the only time a contact lens had been tried as a solution to the problem.  The results were excellent as the letters were sharply defined and clear. I easily read the 20/80 line and was reading the 20/60 line when an employee of the hospital interrupted stating, “Dr. Stanley is ready for you.”  I was then ushered back into Dr. Stanley’s office.

As I was sitting at the slit lamp Dr. Stanley produced a permission form for me to sign.  Since I could not read it, I specifically inquired what the risks in fact were because I had only the eye with the transplant that was capable of good vision. In response to this inquiry Dr. Stanley gave the unmistakable impression that he regarded this suture removal as very minor, jokingly stating that, “removing the sutures somewhat weakens the cornea and you should avoid being punched in the eye.” He said nothing whatever to suggest the possibility of losing the eye, which would have led me to reconsider the whole procedure. Had I known of the risks I would certainly have chosen any other solution, such as a contact lens, but Dr. Stanley did not tell me that a contact lens was an option.

Dr. Stanley then numbed the eye at the slit lamp and went around the periphery of the cornea, cutting the sutures. I knew that was being done because Dr. Stanley explained what he was going to do, and as he proceeded it was obvious that was what he was doing. He then tried to pull the sutures out, at one point stating that he wanted to use another instrument and going into another room to get it. He pulled harder and harder, which I could easily feel.  Dr. Stanley stated that the stitches were, “very tight,” “tight,” and, verbatim, “I’ve never seen this before.”  Soon he was pulling hard enough that I could feel the eye moving out of position, a fact Dr. Stanley commented on. I then felt a distinct pain in the back of the eye” From time to time heard, or felt, a tiny “pop” and the eye would settle back into position. I remember thinking, “This can’t be right. It feels like he is going to pull the front of the eye out.”

Dr. Stanley then said, “We may have a leak,” followed a few minutes later by an assertion that there was, “definitely a leak.”  I felt liquid running down my cheek and asked if it were tears or aqueous humor pouring from the eye.  Dr. Stanley responded “aqueous,” said that surgery would be needed to reseal the eye,  and left me, saying he had to get a gurney and make arrangements for assistance and an OR.

He left me sitting at the slit lamp with no bandage, contact lens to prevent loss of aqueous, clear shield, or other protective measure or bandage over the eye.  He did not tell me not to strain, squeeze, or touch the eye.  However at no point did I touch or squeeze the eye, having been through far too much eye surgery over the years to do such a thing.  In five or ten minutes a gurney was brought in. He placed me flat on my back on it.  I lay there for an extended period of time while Dr. Stanley tried to assemble the necessary personnel to undertake surgery to close the eye.  He did not place any sort of shield or bandage over the eye. In about a half hour or forty-five minutes Dr. Stanley put drops in the eye and suddenly I felt the most intense pain I had ever experienced. Someone said, “There’s blood coming from the eye.”  I had suffered a choroidal hemorrhage.  This hemorrhage has left the eye totally blind.

They were able to use general anesthesia since by chance I had been fasting in the expectation of having unrelated blood work done after the removal of the sutures.

I saw Dr. Stanley at Bethesda about a week later. He examined the eye, told me that I could go back to Mexico, and gave me antibiotic drops and a large supply of oxycontin, telling me to take two tablets every four hours. He gave me no instructions to seek follow-ups with an ophthalmologist in Mexico, and never communicated with me again, though he had my emaill address.

The loss of the eye was a terrible shock to me. I had expected to have normal or nearly normal vision in the eye and had planned to return to my work in journalism, having for example made tentative plans with Kara Hopkins, then the editor of The American Conservative, to go to Afghanistan for the magazine. Having been blinded, and thus unable to travel without my wife to help me, my reporting days were over. I became extremely depressed.  The effects of losing one’s vision are hard to describe. Loss of a leg would be a nuisance, but losing one’s sight is ghastly.

I began to drink more than I should, tried not to take my moods out on my wife, and tried to force myself to follow a normal routine. I had previously been diagnosed by the Veterans Administration as fifty percent disabled by PTSD resulting from service with the Marines in Viet Nam. The loss of the eye made the PTSD symptoms much worse.

Smoking ‘rots’ brain, says King’s College study

Posted on November 26, 2012. Filed under: Health, Medical |

Cigarette
Does smoking affect the health of the mind as well as the body?

Smoking “rots” the brain by damaging memory, learning and reasoning, according to researchers at King’s College London.

A study of 8,800 people over 50 showed high blood pressure and being overweight also seemed to affect the brain, but to a lesser extent.

Scientists involved said people needed to be aware that lifestyles could damage the mind as well as the body.

Their study was published in the journal Age and Ageing.

Researchers at King’s were investigating links between the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke and the state of the brain.

Data about the health and lifestyle of a group of over-50s was collected and brain tests, such as making participants learn new words or name as many animals as they could in a minute, were also performed.

They were all tested again after four and then eight years.

Decline

The results showed that the overall risk of a heart attack or stroke was “significantly associated with cognitive decline” with those at the highest risk showing the greatest decline.

It also said there was a “consistent association” between smoking and lower scores in the tests.

These results underline the importance of looking after your cardiovascular health from mid-life”

Dr Simon Ridley Alzheimer’s Research UK

One of the researchers, Dr Alex Dregan, said: “Cognitive decline becomes more common with ageing and for an increasing number of people interferes with daily functioning and well-being.

“We have identified a number of risk factors which could be associated with accelerated cognitive decline, all of which, could be modifiable.”

He added: “We need to make people aware of the need to do some lifestyle changes because of the risk of cognitive decline.”

The researchers do not know how such a decline could affect people going about their daily life. They are also unsure whether the early drop in brain function could lead to conditions such as dementia.

Heart and brain

Dr Simon Ridley, from Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Research has repeatedly linked smoking and high blood pressure to a greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia, and this study adds further weight to that evidence.

“Cognitive decline as we age can develop into dementia, and unravelling the factors that are linked to this decline could be crucial for finding ways to prevent the condition.

“These results underline the importance of looking after your cardiovascular health from mid-life.”

The Alzheimer’s Society said: “We all know smoking, a high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and a high BMI [Body Mass Index] is bad for our heart. This research adds to the huge amount of evidence that also suggests they can be bad for our head too.

“One in three people over 65 will develop dementia but there are things people can do to reduce their risk.

“Eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, getting your blood pressure and cholesterol checked and not smoking can all make a difference.”

Researchers discover gene that permanently stops cancer cell proliferation

Posted on August 4, 2012. Filed under: Health, Medical, Science/Tech | Tags: |

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have discovered a mutant form of the gene, Chk1, that when expressed in cancer cells, permanently stopped their proliferation and caused cell death without the addition of any chemotherapeutic drugs. This study illustrates an unprecedented finding, that artificially activating Chk1 alone is sufficient to kill cancer cells.

“We have identified a new direction for cancer therapy and the new direction is leading us to a reduction in toxicity in cancer therapy, compared with chemotherapy or radiation therapy,” said Dr. Zhang, assistant professor, Department of Pharmacology at the School of Medicine, and member of the university’s Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“With this discovery, scientists could stop the proliferation of cancer cells, allowing physicians time to fix cells and genetic errors.” While studying the basic mechanisms for genome integrity, Dr. Zhang’s team unexpectedly discovered an active mutant form of human Chk1, which is also a non-natural form of this gene. This mutation changed the protein conformation of Chk1 from the inactive form into an active form. Remarkably, the research team discovered that when expressed in cancer cells, this active mutant form of Chk1 permanently stopped cancer cell proliferation and caused cell death in petri dishes even without the addition of any chemotherapeutic drugs.

The biggest advantage of this potential strategy is that no toxic chemotherapeutic drug is needed to achieve the same cancer killing effect used with a combination of Chk1 inhibitors and chemotherapeutic drugs. Cells respond to DNA damage by activating networks of signaling pathways, termed cell cycle checkpoints. Central to these genome pathways is the protein kinase, called Chk1. Chk1 facilitates cell survival, including cancer cells, under stressful conditions, such as those induced by chemotherapeutic agents, by placing a temporary stop on the cell cycle progression and coordinating repair programs to fix the DNA errors.

It has long been suggested that combining Chk1 inhibition with chemotherapy or radiotherapy should significantly enhance the anticancer effect of these therapies. This idea has serves as the basis for multiple pharmaceutical companies searching for potential Chk1 inhibitors that can effectively combine with chemotherapy in cancer therapy. To date, no Chk1 inhibitor has passed the clinical trial stage III .

This led Dr. Zhang’s team to look for alternative strategies for targeting Chk1 in cancer therapy. Future research by Dr. Zhang and his team will consider two possible approaches to artificially activating Chk1 in cancer cells. One possibility is to use the gene therapy concept to deliver the active mutant form of Chk1 that the team discovered, into cancer cells.

The other is to search for small molecules that can induce the same conformational change of Chk1, so that they can be delivered into cancer cells to activate Chk1 molecules. The consequence of either would be permanent cell proliferation inhibition and cancer.

‘Everywhere’ chemical in cancer link

Posted on June 8, 2012. Filed under: Environment, Health, Medical |

Love popcorn? Whatever you do, don’t make yours in the microwave — because nuked popcorn contains a chemical you won’t find listed in the ingredients.

And it can wreck your health.

It’s not the popcorn itself or even the fake buttery spread — although, let’s face it, those are bad enough.

It’s C-8P, or perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a chemical used to manufacture the heat-resistant fluoropolymers used in microwave popcorn packaging, fast food burger wrappers, nonstick cookware, and more.

It’s practically everywhere, really — and now, a team of independent scientists says this stuff could give you cancer.

And how we found out about this disease link is an absolute tragedy.

Years ago, the groundwater in a region of West Virginia was contaminated with PFOA from a chemical plant that makes the stuff. But the people didn’t know it. Not at first anyway — so for years, they were getting low-but-constant levels of it from their drinking water.

Now, they’re paying the price: Scientists brought in to monitor the community say they’ve established a “probable link” between PFOA exposure and both kidney and testicular cancer.

In fact, high levels of PFOA increased the risk of kidney cancer by 170 percent, according to the panel.

Last year, the same panel found a link between the chemical and pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy) — and there could be more revelations to come as the panel gets ready to release a series of reports on possible links between PFOA and heart disease, thyroid problems, neurological issues in children, and more.

I’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, work on avoiding these chemicals as much as you can, and not just PFOA. This stuff is part of an entire class of dangerous chemicals called PFCs, and they’re used to make things waterproof, wrinkle-free, stain-resistant, heat-resistant, and non-stick.

And along with cancer, they’ve been linked to hypothyroidism, immune system problems, reproductive disorders, and more.

What makes this so much worse is that these chemicals stay in the body for a very long time. The half-life of PFOA — the amount of time it takes for half of the original amount to leave the body — is 4.4 years.

Another PFC, PFOS, has a half-life of nine years.

Clearly, a little bit goes a very long way.

Since they’re in everything, they’re not easy to avoid — so let me get you started: You can pop ordinary popcorn kernels in your microwave using nothing more than a plain brown paper lunch bag.

You don’t even need oil.

It’s cheap, easy, and every bit as fast. Not to mention chemical-free… and no fake buttery spread.

Students Having Heart Attacks from WiFi

Posted on June 7, 2012. Filed under: Environment, Health, Medical, Science/Tech |

The Microwave Factor

Microwave – and other forms of electromagnetic – radiation are major (but conveniently disregarded, ignored, and overlooked) factors in many modern unexplained disease states. Insomnia, anxiety, vision problems, swollen lymph, headaches, extreme thirst, night sweats, fatigue, memory and concentration problems, muscle pain, weakened immunity, allergies, heart problems, and intestinal disturbances are all symptoms found in a disease process originally described in the 1970s as Microwave Sickness.

Defibrillators In High Schools??

If your child (or you!) has been getting unexplained headaches, nosebleeds, insomnia, heart palpitations, nausea or dizziness, then it’s a really good idea for you to take a look at your cell phone and WiFi exposure as a possible cause. This email sent out by a woman working tirelessly to get her school to hardwire their computers is a very powerful testimony and may do more to make people aware of the ill health effects of this technology than all the scientific info I’ve been posting here:My experience is different than most parents.

Last month my internet provider died of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma at 48 leaving behind 4 young kids. He used his cellular phone much more than 30 minutes a day and used wifi routers at his office and at home as well.

A few weeks ago singer Adam Yauch died of Parotid Salivary Gland cancer at 47. He also used a cellular phone heavily for more than 20 years.

It’s possible that both deaths were preventable.

My neighbour’s partner used a brick phone in the 80’s and last year underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour with his kids being just 9 and 12 years of age.

I have a friend who is a chef and another who has a 16 year old daughter. Both live with wifi routers and use wifi enabled laptops and use their cellular phones more than 30 minutes a day and sleep with their cell phones on their night table. Both women stopped menstruating for seven to ten months until they reduced their wireless usage.

My friend’s son has heart palpitations at the age of 12 and needs a heart monitor and his school has several commercial grade multiple antenna wifi routers. When he is at home, his heart has a regular rhythm.

My naturopath’s daughter sat under a commercial grade multiple antenna wifi router at school for a year and became dizzy, nauseas, anxious, had ringing ears, headaches, and was light headed – which are all classic symptoms of over exposure to microwave radiation – that they had to home school her and ultimately move to a remote location away from multiple forms of microwave radiofrequency radiation.

The Toronto school board now has defibrillators in every high school because of the risk of heart attack for students.

Is it just me or does it seem extremely odd that teenagers are having heart attacks regularly?

I question everything.

These deaths and illnesses make me wonder what are we actually allowing when we say yes to a class 2b carcinogen that can’t be touched, seen, heard, smelled or tasted in our children’s schools?

I implore you to consider maintaining the current wired internet access at one school of each level in each district as you reflect on: “Who is liable when children start getting over exposed from microwave wireless radiation – a class 2b carcinogen?”

The schools are taking that liability away from wifi manufacturers.

Do all schools have the liability insurance to cover the illnesses that will happen in the coming years or even in 10, 20, or 30 years?

Why won’t insurance companies cover wifi manufacturers?

With the best actuarial studies – it is due “to the incalculable risk to human health.”

When parents start sending in their Notices of Liability to school administrators, school trustees and school district officials, will schools start treating Microwave Wireless Radiation as the class 2b carcinogen it is and protect all children with the precautionary principle and maintain current wired internet access and think: Safety over Convenience?

Microwave Wireless Radiation ultimately affects everyone.

-Susan McFee

Langley Fine Arts School PAC SD #35″

My own kids are so concerned about this that they set up their own website to educate other kids, they called it: RadiationEducation.com

If you’re a parent, go to their site and download their free Action Pack. I also have numerous posts on this site going into detail about the health effects of microwave radiation from WiFi computers, cell phones, iPads, Wii, X-box, etc. Just type “WiFi Radiation” into my SEARCH box on this site and it will pull all my posts up for you.
Charlie Teo is one of the few neurosurgeon’s who is willing to stand up and say anything about cell phones causing brain tumours, so definitely check him out.

Living Through Loss

Posted on May 18, 2011. Filed under: Medical, Psychology |

Usually words can’t comfort the grieving. Just being there in silence or listening is comforting. Nothing can change what has happened but being with the bereaved is the best we can do. The bereaved need companions who will truly listen and perhaps do some of the small, everyday things that need doing–mowing the lawn, changing the oil in the car, preparing a meal– any number of things.

Grieving is normal and unavoidable–it is a part of life, and it takes time. We don’t get over it, we get through it. Going through grief is a series of stages: shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and then acceptance, which is the first step. You must come to terms with your loss and accept that it is real and permanent.

The stages of grief are not necessarily in this order, but it usually takes one or two years, or sometimes 4, 5 or more years for a person to work through the loss of a child or spouse, as well as a divorce. The loss of a job, home, health, all require a significant amount of time to work through. There is no time frame. We can’t control the process and this makes us feel vulnerable and sensitive to outside stimuli. It needs to takes its natural course because if we try to deny our grief and keep our emotions bottled up inside, this can lead to chronic depression or physical illness.

Recent research indicates that some kind of ceremonial farewell is helpful in aiding the bereaved to adjust to the death of someone close. We must acknowledge publicly and formally that something significant has happened or we may find more difficulty in the grieving process. During the grieving process, it’s normal to cry, lose your appetite, and withdraw socially. Eventually instead of living moment-to-moment with our deep feeling of sadness, we will experience these feelings intermittently. Then we can think about getting back to work, resuming our social life, doing our routine daily tasks again, such as cleaning house, paying the bills, caring for the children–even if we sometimes have to ask for help from a friend or relative.

It’s a good idea to keep a journal of one’s thoughts and feelings, or write letters to the one who has died, or write a story of your memories, or write poetry. Grief can be expressed through painting or sculpture, or by participating in whatever you are proficient in doing. Perhaps sewing or woodworking–perhaps starting a project that will help others. Spend time outdoors in a park or at the seashore. Being in touch with nature can be both healing and restorative. It’s important to retain our friendships because feelings of alienation and abandonment are part of the grieving process.

The best method of fighting these feelings is to look for others to console. The person who has gone through the loss of a loved one is uniquely qualified and best able to understand others going through the same pain. Spending time with people who have undergone a similar loss can be very therapeutic. You discover how natural your emotions are that you go through during the grieving process. You can receive moral support and learn from the experiences and the ideas of others. Support groups are not for everyone but many people swear by them.

Taking care of your health is an important part of getting through your loss. Some physical problems, such as insomnia, loss of appetite, muscle tenseness, are to be expected. Avoid becoming overly tired, get enough rest and sleep, eat nutritious meals, find support, hope and comfort from something you have faith in or are interested in, and life will be better. Avoid making major decisions and changes in your life, as routine and familiarity with your surroundings give you a feeling of stability and permanence when you feel in chaos.

The scriptures state; A time to weep, and a time to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time to dance. The time of weeping and mourning will be over. When we are able to form new relationships, perhaps love again, we are on the road to recovery. You can pick up the pieces and go on, the wound heals but the scar remains.

Underage Drinking

Posted on March 6, 2011. Filed under: Health, Lifestyles, Medical |

It is frightening to me when I hear about students becoming involved in drugs and alcohol, and at increasingly younger ages.  Although they may not realize it, they are still children. From a physiological standpoint alone, they are still developing.

We know the damage that ensues when the growing fetus is exposed to alcohol. We know that, even in adults, alcohol damages brain cells. Our focus, with young drinkers, tends to be on the dangers of being out of control, especially around vehicles. We fear young women may become pregnant because the alcohol has affected their judgement. These are the obvious concerns most parents worry about.

The less obvious effects, with both drugs and alcohol is impairment in thinking, but not only while drunk or high. The teen who is using substances on the weekend, will not have the clarity of mind to absorb what is being taught in school on Monday, or to do assignments or tests to the best of their ability. Because gaining knowledge or skills is cumulative, the teen who uses substances regularly begins to fall further behind in school. With increased academic difficulty, and perhaps pressure from teachers and parents to get their grades up, or assignments handed in, motivation for learning declines.

The individual is then more inclined to spend time with others who are not academically motivated, than with those who are working towards achieving goals. They may insist substance use does not interfere with their learning, but statistically, I think we would find a higher incidence of using among school dropouts and poor performers than amongst those who are consistently achieving in the top quarter of their classes.

Having said all this, I am equally disturbed by the fact that many parents condone alcohol use by their children who are minors, and provide a place where other minors can drink. Saying, “I know you will drink anyway, so I’d rather have you drink here,” is a poor excuse for not being a responsible parent. It encourages kids to drink, and undermines parents who do not want their children drinking.

The best way to protect your minors from the dangers of alcohol use is not to provide a ‘safe’ place for them to harm their bodies and compromise their futures. It is to teach them not to get involved in substance use until they are old enough to make wise decisions.

Doctor Warns: Eat This and You’ll Look 5 Years Older

By Dr. Mercola

In the early 1990’s, soy and soy products exploded onto the supermarket scene with promises of bountiful health benefits. This “new miracle food,” soy, was supposed to lower cholesterol, take the heat out of hot flashes, protect against breast and prostate cancer and offer a filling alternative to earth-loving vegetarians.

The problem with these claims?

Most of them are false.

Sadly, most of what you have been led to believe by the media about soy is simply untrue. The sudden upsurge in the recommendation of soy as a health food has been nothing more than a clever marketing gimmick to further reduce the cost and nutritional content of your food.

For you vegetarians out there staring at the screen in open-mouthed shock, fear not. There are plenty of other healthy vegetarian alternatives, which I will discuss later in this article. What was once considered a minor industrial crop back in 1913 now covers over 72 million acres of farmland. But first, let’s examine the dangers and side effects of soy protein isolate and GMO foods.

Soy Protein Isolate — What is It, and How is it Getting in My Food?

The Soyfoods Association of America has a soy protein “fact sheet” defining soy protein isolate as the following:

“Soy protein isolate is a dry powder food ingredient that has been separated or isolated from the other components of the soybean, making it 90 to 95 percent protein and nearly carbohydrate and fat-free.”

Soy protein isolate can be found in protein bars, meal replacement shakes, bottled fruit drinks, soups and sauces, meat analogs, baked goods, breakfast cereals and some dietary supplements.

Bodybuilders beware: because many weight gainer powders, bars and shakes contain this dangerous ingredient and it can cause troubling side effects such as diminished libido and erectile dysfunction — and this is just the start. You’ll find out more about these disturbing health effects later on in this article.

Even if you are not a vegetarian and do not use soymilk or tofu, it is important to become a label reader. There are so many different names for soy additives, you could be bringing home a genetically modified soy-based product without even realizing it. Dr. Daniel offers a free Special Report, “Where the Soys Are,” on her Web site. It lists the many “aliases” that soy might be hiding under in ingredient lists — words like “boullion,” “natural flavor” and “textured plant protein.”

Here are a few other names soy tends to hide under:

Mono-diglyceride

Soya, Soja or Yuba

TSF (textured soy flour) or TSP (textured soy protein)

TVP (textured vegetable protein)

Lecithin

MSG (monosodium glutamate)

Not all textured vegetable protein is made from soy, but a great deal of it is. Lecithin can be made from soy, eggs, sunflower or corn. Be sure to contact the manufacturer to find out which is in your product if the label doesn’t reveal this information.

GMO — Making Soy Even Worse

One of the worst problems with soy comes from the fact that 90 to 95 percent of soybeans grown in the US are genetically modified (GM), and these are used to create soy protein isolate.

Why the genetic tinkering?

Genetically modified soybeans are designed to be “Roundup ready.” That’s right, they are chemically engineered to withstand heavy doses of herbicides without killing the plant! What does this mean for your health and the health of your unborn or yet-to-be-conceived children? Read on.

GM Soy Can Lead to Hormonal Disruption and Miscarriages

The active ingredient in Roundup herbicide is called glyphosate, which is responsible for the disruption of the delicate hormonal balance of the female reproductive cycle.

“It’s an endocrine buster,” says UK pathologist Stanley Ewen, “that interferes with aromatase, which produces estrogen.”

What’s more, glyphosate is toxic to the placenta, which is responsible for delivering vital nutrients from mother to child, and eliminating waste products. Once the placenta has been damaged or destroyed, the result can be miscarriage. In those children born to mothers who have been exposed to even a small amount of glyphosate, serious birth defects can result.

In an excellent summary of glyphosate-related effects by the Pesticide Action Network, Dr. Andreas Carrasco of the Embryology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine in Buenos Aires, simply and expertly explains the serious risks for unborn children exposed to Roundup-laden GMO soy products.

Amphibian embryos were exposed to a tiny concentration of glyphosate (diluted 5000 fold) and showed the following effects:

“Effects included reduced head size, genetic alterations in the central nervous system, increased death of cells that help form the skull, deformed cartilage, eye defects, and undeveloped kidneys. Carrasco also stated that the glyphosate was not breaking down in the cells, but was accumulating.

The findings lend weight to claims that abnormally high levels of cancer, birth defects, neonatal mortality, lupus, kidney disease, and skin and respiratory problems in populations near Argentina’s soybean fields may be linked to the aerial spraying of Roundup.”

The long-term effects of the human consumption of genetically modified soy and soy-based products are staggering.

In April 2010, researchers at Russia’s Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Association for Gene Security found that after feeding hamsters GM soy for two years over three generations, by the third generation, most lost the ability to have babies! Now, let’s take a close look at some of the health risks to YOU as a result of eating genetically modified soy.

Infertility in Women

Do you want to start a family? Have you had any trouble conceiving, perhaps due to irregular menstrual cycles or endometriosis? Have you ever experienced a miscarriage?

If so, what you’re about to read will shock you.

A Brazilian study published in 2009 looked at the impact of soy on the reproductive system of female rats. Female rats fed GM soy for 15 months showed significant changes in their uterus and reproductive cycles, compared to rats fed organic soy or no soy.

Extrapolating the findings to people, women who eat genetically modified soy products, such as the soy protein isolate in processed vegetarian fare, may be more likely to experience severe hormonal disruptions, including an overabundance of estrogen, a hair-growth stimulating hormone, and damage to the pituitary gland.

According to Dr. Stanley Ewen, the female rats fed GM soy probably had an increase in progesterone, which could cause an increase in the number of eggs released during each ovulation cycle.

You might think this would lead to an increase in fertility. However, as discussed in an article by Jeffrey Smith, women who consume genetically modified soy products are at increased risk for developing retrograde menstruation (the menstrual cycle backs up into the body instead of outward), causing endometriosis, which can lead to infertility.

The consumption of soy protein isolate and other soy-based products can also lead to abnormally heavy or longer menstrual periods. This is called menorrhagia and, ironically, some commercials have been popping up with a new pill that supposedly offers the “cure” for this “mystery syndrome.”

When in reality the real cure for some women is as simple as removing soy and soy-based products from the diet. The negative effects of soy are not restricted to women, however.

Loss of Libido & Erectile Dysfunction in Men

Guys, do you enjoy protein bars or use a weight gainer shake? If so, be sure to read the label to see if the products you use contain any soy ingredients. Did you know that celibate monks living in monasteries and leading a vegetarian lifestyle find soy foods quite helpful for dampening libido?

Another drawback: Soy has also been linked to erectile dysfunction. The two natural drugs found in soy, genistein and daidzein, mimic estrogen so well that they have been known to cause a variety of alarming side effects in men:

Breast enlargement (gynecomastia)

Decreased facial and body hair growth

Decreased libido

Mood swings and frequent crying jags

Erectile dysfunction

Lowered sperm count

For example, one recent study documented a case of gynecomastia in a 60-year-old man as a result of his soy consumption. Another study showed that juvenile rats exposed to daidzein showed impaired erectile function at maturity.

Men, if you’ve experienced one or any of these symptoms, soy could be the culprit. Remove it from your diet, but be sure to consult a trusted physician if your symptoms do not improve or get worse as this could be a sign of another serious condition.

The Healthy Aspects of Soy: Fermented vs. Unfermented

In order to back up the claim that soy is a health food, privately funded “researchers” have been quick to point out that Asians, who consume a diet high in soy, have less risk of breast, uterine and prostate cancer. Unfortunately, they leave out two very important
points:

Asians, especially the Japanese, while having a decreased risk of the above-mentioned cancers, have a much higher risk of developing cancer of the esophagus, thyroid, stomach, pancreas and liver!

Asians also consume a diet rich in fermented soy, which is the only type of soy to offer health benefits.

The reason Asians have an increased risk for some cancers is the same reason they do not develop others: unfermented soy. The soy marketing and promotion gurus left out this critical piece of information. Would you rather have one cancer over another? Isn’t that like asking whether or not you’d like to be whacked in the head with a two-by-four vs. a wooden stick?

You might be asking yourself what the big difference is between consuming a fermented soy product such as, say, tempeh, vs. tofu or a veggie burger. I’m here to tell you, the difference is night and day.

Unfermented AND fermented soy contains hormonal mimics in the form of isoflavones which can not only disrupt delicate hormone systems in your body, but also act as goitrogens, substances that suppress your thyroid function. When the thyroid is suppressed, a host of health problems result, namely:

Anxiety and mood swings

Insomnia

Difficulty losing weight

Difficulty conceiving children

Digestive problems

Food allergies

And so much more. No wonder soy can lead to thyroid, esophagus and stomach cancer! Unfermented soy is also chock full of phytic acid, an “antinutrient” responsible for leeching vital nutrients from your body. Phytic acid also blocks the uptake of essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc especially.

Now, fermented soy products do provide health benefits.

As I mentioned in my previous article, some examples of healthful fermented soyproducts are as follows:

Tempeh, a fermented soybean cake with a firm texture and nutty, mushroom-like flavor.

Miso, a fermented soybean paste with a salty, buttery texture (commonly used in miso soup).

Natto, fermented soybeans with a sticky texture and strong, cheese-like flavor.

Soy sauce, which is traditionally made by fermenting soybeans, salt and enzymes; be wary because many varieties on the market today are made artificially using a chemical process.

For those of you who enjoy tofu, I’m sorry to say it didn’t make this list because tofu is an unfermented soy product.

So, What Are The Health Benefits of Fermented Soy Products?

The claim that soy products can prevent osteoporosis, decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease and dementia and protect you from cancer of the prostate, lung and liver is actually true, but ONLY if the soy is fermented.

How?

The process of fermenting soy destroys the above-mentioned dangerous substances, thereby making it fit for consumption. Also, fermented soy products such as those listed above are a rich source of vitamin K2, a vitamin that works in harmony with vitamin D to keep you healthy. Vitamin K regulates your body’s blood clotting ability and helps prevent cancer, osteoporosis and heart disease. And vitamin D is essential to the function of every system in your body.

Warning to Vegetarians about the Risk of Mineral Deficiency

Since phytic acid or phytates sap the nutrients from your body, if you’re eating a vegetarian diet that has replaced meat with mostly unfermented soy such as veggie burgers containing GMO soy protein isolate, you are at risk for severe mineral deficiency.

In addition to this nutrient loss, many processed veggie burgers and the like are packed with harmful artificial flavorings, particularly MSG and textured vegetable protein products to give them their strong “meat” flavor.

What’s even worse is the process soy has to go through to become soy protein isolate. Acid washing in aluminum tanks, which is designed to remove some of the antinutrients (but the results often vary widely), leeches aluminum into the final product. Aluminum can have adverse effects on brain development and cause symptoms such as:

Antisocial behavior

Learning disabilities

Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

As I mentioned in a previous article about soy, this makes processed vegetarian fare more palatable, but far from nutritious. Vegetarians have plenty of options for well-rounded, nutritious meals without needing to eat soy or soy-based products.

Beans are an inexpensive, protein-rich food that can be eaten alone, added to salads or served as a side dish. Be sure to purchase organic dried beans and cook them at home to avoid the adverse health effects of eating canned food. Ideally is it also best to soak them for at least 12 hours before cooking them.

Nuts are also an excellent source of protein. For optimal health benefits, reach for organic nuts such as almonds or walnuts, instead of overly processed mixed nuts.

Quinoa is a gluten free grain that can be enjoyed as a cereal, side dish or added to homemade vegetable stews as a thickener.

Flaxseed, which is rich in essential omega 3 fats like ALA, is an excellent source of protein. Add it to salads or sprinkle it over yogurt to infuse your meal with vital nutrients. However, it is important to grind flax seeds just prior to eating them because100 percent of commercially ground flaxseeds are rancid. Hemp seeds are also an excellent source of protein.

Hope for the Lactose Intolerant

If you suffer from lactose intolerance and have been replacing milk with soy, you have three more healthful options: Almond milk, and now hemp milk. All are nutritious alternatives to soy, and almond milk has a richer, heartier flavor. Hemp milk is a very creamy, high protein alternative to soymilk, and it’s easy to blend your own by whizzing up hemp seeds and water in a high-speed blender.

Babies — Birth Control in a Bottle

As stated in a number of previous articles, soy formula is one of the most dangerous foods you can feed your baby!

“In 1998, investigators reported that the daily exposure of infants to isoflavones in soy infant formula is 6 to11 times higher on a body-weight basis than the dose that has hormonal effects in adults consuming soy foods. Circulating concentrations of isoflavones in infants fed soy-based formula were 13,000 to 22,000 times higher than plasma estradiol concentrations in infants on cow’s milk formula.”

What does this mean? Feeding your infant soy-based formula can cause a host of health problems including:

Behavioral problems

Food allergies and digestive distress

Early puberty and fertility problems (including the inability to menstruate)

Asthma

Precocious puberty for girls and gynecomastia (man boobs) for boys

Thyroid disease

Cancer

As I concluded in my article on infant formula, babies who are fed exclusively from the breast from birth to six months enjoy health benefits such as:

Lower risk of respiratory tract and middle ear infections

Lower risk of eczema

Lower risk of obesity

Added protection against heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and allergies

Improved brain function and immune system function

Soy formula is also laden with toxic chemicals such as aluminum and manganese, which can cause both physical and mental health problems, learning disabilities, brain damage and behavioral problems. If, for some reason, you are unable to breastfeed or have adopted a baby, look into these recipes for homemade infant formula.

School Lunch — Children’s Nutrition Left Behind

In order to comply with new US Government standards, soy products are now being used to replace whole, nutritious foods in school lunches. Due to the decreased fat content of soy, it is touted as a healthful alternative to the meat and dairy of yesterday’s hot meal.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Soy added to your child’s hot lunch depletes the necessary nutrients needed for healthy growth and has been linked to learning disabilities. I encourage you to watch this sobering video to learn more about the dangers in your child’s school lunch. Do your children a favor and send them to school with a healthy, home-packed meal.

Senior Citizens — Aging Less Gracefully

According to a study done by Dr. Lon White of the Hawaii Center for Health Research, senior citizens who consumed a lot of tofu in mid-life were more likely to experience accelerated brain aging and a more pronounced loss of cognitive function.

“What’s more,” said Dr White, “those who ate a lot of tofu, by the time they were 75 or 80, looked five years older.”

If you’re heading toward your golden years and are looking to avoid soy protein, become a label reader. Meal replacement drinks like Ensure are filled with soy protein and are best avoided. If you’re looking for a wholesome, nutrient-filled vegetarian meal replacement drink, try my 100% Pure Pea Protein supplement. As you can see, unfermented soy is anything but a health food.

Do your own research, try eliminating it from your family’s diet and judge the results for yourself. Remember, an educated consumer is an armed consumer. Big companies can only produce and sell these harmful products as long as you’re buying them.

Vote with your wallet by spending your money on healthier alternatives!

Bad bumps to head could kill years later: U.S. study

Posted on August 18, 2010. Filed under: Health, Medical |

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Scientists reported on Tuesday they have some of the best evidence yet to support long-held theories that repeated blows to the head may cause nerve-degenerative diseases like Lou Gehrig’s disease and Alzheimer’s.Autopsies of 12 athletes who died with brain or neurological disease showed a distinctive pattern of nerve damage — and fingered some potential culprits.

All had repeated concussions during their careers. Three of the men had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, the star baseball player who died of it.

Experts in brain injury said the study, published in the Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology, pointed to new areas of research and possible ways to prevent long-term damage from concussions.

“If you could somehow give a person a drug, you could potentially prevent an illness like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,” Dr. Jeffrey Bazarian of the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York said in a telephone interview.

The findings also point to an urgent need to watch veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of whom suffer brain injuries from explosions, accidents and blows to the head from other causes, the experts said.

“This is the first pathological evidence that repetitive head trauma experienced in collision sports might be associated with the development of a motor neuron disease,” Dr. Ann McKee of Boston University School of Medicine and colleagues wrote in the report, available at link.reuters.com/fab65n.

McKee’s team studied the donated brain and spinal cords of 11 professional football players or boxers and one hockey player. All had a newly characterized disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, in which dementia set in years after repeated concussions.

PROTEIN CULPRIT

Three of the men also were diagnosed with ALS, a member of a family of diseases called motor neuron disease, which cause progressively worse paralysis.

The researchers looked specifically for a protein called TDP-43. They found it in the brain and in the spinal cords of the men — which could explain the ALS-like symptoms.

Scientists know that damaging one nerve can sometimes set off a cascade of other nerves dying, for reasons that remain poorly understood. TDP-43 could be involved.

Bazarian, who was on an Institute of Medicine Committee that released a report in 2008 linking concussions to later-life neurologic diseases, said the finding could help explain studies that show Iraq war veterans have a higher-than-normal rate of ALS, for example.

Drugs including the hormone progesterone, monoclonal antibodies and the antibiotic minocycline are being studied to see if they can stop the process of nerve destruction that follows injuries such as a blow to the head or stroke.

The findings will be difficult to substantiate because ALS is so rare, said ALS expert Martina Wiedau-Pazos of the University of California, Los Angeles.

“We think there already are different forms of ALS,” she said — potentially with different causes.

David Hovda, director of the UCLA Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center, said brain injury is very common with 1.5 million cases in the United States alone each year.

“Whether by itself in isolation it causes ALS, I do not think that this paper proves that. What I think it does is raise worries that individuals who had a career of exposure to repeat concussions … have a greater likelihood of developing motor neuron disease,” he said.
